UGRFC 2XV v BRISTOL 3XV

Gloucestershire 2xv claimed their first victory of the season as they clinched a late win against Bristol 3xv in an extremely close afternoon.

Bristol opened the scoring early in the first half with a penalty followed by a try and gathered themselves an early score advantage. UGRFC replied through a try via Harrison Stevens who scored in the corner. The conversion was taken wide by the wind but Gloucestershire were closing in on Bristol’s early lead.

Both sides showed promising attacking play, but handling errors started to cost the teams as penalties and knock-ons became a regular occurrence.

Gloucestershire hoped to level the scores with a penalty kick just off half way, but the distance wasn’t quite there and the score remained the same.

Late in the first-half Bristol ran in another try as well as UGRFC kicking a successful penalty kick, leaving the half time score 8-15.

In his last game with the Gloucestershire boys before he returns back to Japan, prop Daki Saito powered over the white wash following some good attacking play from the forward pack and with the successful conversion the scores were all level at 15 apiece.

Bristol attacked hard into UGRFC’s 22’ and their efforts paid off with another try produced from some good attacking play from their backs. The conversion was missed giving them an advantage of five.

Gloucestershire dug deep in the final quarter of the game to push hard for their first win of the season, and their efforts were rewarded when Reuben Gathercole collected a pass out wide to send him over the try-line in the corner. The conversion was successful and put UGRFC 2 points ahead of Bristol with under ten minutes left to play.

In the closing play of the game, Bristol won a penalty within kicking range and took the opportunity to take the win away from Gloucestershire with a kick to the posts. However, the ball bounced off the uprights giving UGRFC 2’s their first win of the season, 22-20.
