UOG alumni Lizzy Yarnold wins outstanding sporting achievement award

Lizzy Yarnold (GBR)

University of Gloucestershire alumni Lizzy Yarnold finishes her sporting career with the Pat Besford Award for outstanding sporting achievement.

The former UOG student is Britain’s most decorated Winter Olympian and announced her retirement from Skeleton earlier this year. She became the first British athlete to retain a Winter Games title when she won gold during the 2018 Pyeongchang games.

Not only has she won the Sports Journalism Association award, on Monday night she was a finalist for the BT Action woman of the year, which is the second most prestigious sports award of the year.

Throughout her career, Yarnold has suffered from a knee condition as well as vestibular disorder which is a condition that affects the brain and ear and can cause periods of dizziness. This makes her achievements within her sport even more laudable given the amount of movement she endures during her race.

Whilst at university, she read Geography and Sports and Exercise Science and since then has come back to talk to students. She recently visited and spoke to our elite sports scholars in May, giving them advice on their current sporting achievements and aspirations.

Yarnold didn’t take up the sport until she was nineteen, which for athletes is a late age to peruse an Olympic ambition nevertheless, her hard work and determination reinforces how spectacular her sporting achievements are.

A few weeks ago, Yarnold took to Instagram to share the news that herself and husband, James are expecting their first child next year as she sees her life triumphs continue into her retirement.
