The Student’s Guide to Baking: Simple Sponge Cake

Sometimes, you just wanna bake a cake. But if you’ve never done it before, it can be hard to work out which recipe out of the millions on the internet to follow.
So we thought we’d write you a simple guide on how to make a basic sponge cake- and from there, who knows, you could be making Christmas pudding by December!

You will need:

-140g butter
-140g self-raising flour
-140g caster sugar (or, if you don’t have any, normal granulated sugar is perfectly fine)
-2 medium eggs
-a mixing bowl
– a wooden spoon
-a baking tin (or any kind of tray that has sides to it)
-access to an oven

How to make:

1)Grease the baking tin (basically, rub a bit of butter on around it) and preheat the oven to 180 degrees.

2) Put the butter and sugar into the mixing bowl and mix until they’re completely combined.

3) Add in both eggs and mix, then add in the flour and continue mixing.

4) Keep stirring until completely mixed, then transfer into the baking tin.

5) Put the tin in the oven at 180 degrees for roughly 40 minutes- if the middle is still runny, it needs to stay in!

You should now have your cake!
To jazz it up a little, add in a little juice or spice (such as orange juice or cinnamon) when the rest of the mixture is together. Or even just smother it in chocolate spread when it comes out the oven!

Happy baking!
