“It’s Christmas time, there’s no need to be afraid”; because it’s everyone’s favourite time of the year. It’s the time to relax, enjoy, spend time with family and most importantly listen to good music. Christmas songs are part of British tradition. Whether you start to listen to them in July or December, everyone listens to them. You can’t escape them really. Whether it’s Mariah, Slade or Wizzard, I can guarantee that you will listen to more than one Christmas song in your lifetime. I have one question though, where have they gone?
We all know the classics such as ‘I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday’ and ‘Merry Christmas Everybody’. Now we are getting ‘One More Sleep’ and ‘Underneath the Tree’. We all know the first two were by Wizzard and Slade but do you know the other two? The fact that you may (or may not) be struggling to answer this says it all really. The classic Christmas songs seem to have disappeared.
In the 70s, 80s and 90s, there would always be a good new Christmas song to add to our playlists, with new releases almost every year. We don’t seem to be getting the same number of Christmas releases now, so is Simon Cowell the reason for the disappearance? Since The X Factor came along in 2004, the Christmas number one spot has been taken by most of the contestants. This may have made artists unwilling to produce and record Christmas songs knowing that the X Factor’s winning single has made it to the top spot.
It could be that people have just become bored with Christmas songs and have lost the spirit to want to listen to something new. We do seem to be getting re-releases or covers of the classics rather than something new. It could also be that Christmas songs are seen as too cheesy now as it gives the artists no credibility. Maybe artists have simply run out of ideas. I’ll let you decide what the reasons are.
